As you explore our website, you will gain a greater insight into what makes Colin Macdonald Community School such a wonderful place.

As Dr Maria Montessori said, “We do not prepare the child for school but for life.” Come and take a closer look.

The goal of both Montessori and Traditional schooling is the same: To provide learning experiences for the child. The biggest differences lie in the kind of learning experiences each school provides and the methods they use to accomplish this goal. Montessori educators believe both differences are important because they help shape what a child learns, his work habits, and his future attitudes toward himself and the world around him.

South America/Open House

Thursday March 12th 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Every year, the staff of Colin Macdonald Community School selects one topic to study as a whole school. And each classroom – regardless of age or grade – takes on the challenge of learning about that topic. Teachers and their students employ art, music, french, math, science, geography, history, culture, drama and literature in the course of learning about a particular subject. Some of our past topics have included “In our Backyard”, The Human Body, Our Town, Asia, Africa, North America, Europe, Planet Earth, Australia, Water and Frozen Worlds.
The topic for this year is “South America”. South America is the fourth largest of the world’s continents. South America has a total area of about 6,878,000 square miles (17,814,000 square km), or roughly one-eighth of the land surface of Earth. South America is home to the world’s biggest rainforest and the largest river (Amazon), the highest mountain range outside Asia (the Andes), remote islands (Galapagos Islands, Easter Island and Fernando de Noronha), heavenly beaches (such as in Brazil’s Northeastern region), wide deserts (Atacama), icy landscapes (Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego), the world’s tallest waterfall (the 979m Angel Falls, in Venezuela) and one of the largest (Iguaçu Falls, Argentina and Brazil), as well as several other breathtaking natural attractions. South America is home to a large variety of animal life. These include animals such as jaguars, macaws, monkeys, anacondas, llamas, piranhas, toucans, tapirs, cougars, condors and chinchillas.

Come and see the great things our students have been working very diligently on and find out more about this fascinating subject… just like we have.

    Years in business

“Selecting the best school to meet the needs of your child, and family is one of the most important decisions you will make. My experience as both an educator and a parent, is that visiting the school and taking a tour during the school day is the best way to determine if your child, your family, and the school are a perfect fit for one another. This gives you an opportunity to see the classrooms and the interactions between students and their peers as well as students and teachers.

At Colin Macdonald Community School we believe children need confidence in themselves as learners, tools so they can find the answers to their questions themselves, preparation for life long learning, and in general, a learner-centred approach rather than one that is curriculum driven. It is being increasingly recognized that students learn better when they have real responsibility for their own education. At Colin Macdonald Community School we allow that to happen.
